Shepherds are highly intelligent and are fun to train as they are very responsive, loyal and courageous. The German Shepherd Dog is widely known for its police and army work, but also for its work as guide dog to the blind. They only bark when it is necessary. They are usually good with other pets, excellent with children and have a good disposition. Generally the German Shepherd has a shoulder height of 56-66 cm (22-26 in) and weighs 35-39 kg (77-85 lbs). Dog Care - Protecting Your Dog from the Heat Whether it is a summer heat wave or you live in a climate that is hot year round, heat stroke can be a problem for you and your dog. Your best friend always needs shade and fresh cool water. Heat exhaustion occurs when your dog becomes over heated - if the environment is too hot, too much exercise during hot weather or poor ventilation. Overweight, older or dogs that are ill are more severely affected. Short nose breeds are also more susceptible. Dogs keep cool by panting it is their way of avoiding heat exhaustion. If you notice that your dog is excessively panting, breathing rapidly, salivating, is fatigued or staggering. These are signs of heat exhaustion. Take your best friend to a cool place immediately and give him small amounts of water. Call your vet! Don’t take your dog jogging except on cool mornings or evenings and don’t force exercise.
