Dog Crate Training is a Snap with this Guide to Successful Dog House Training

Dog Crate Training or confinement is the most efficient and easiest way to house train your puppy or dog. Confinement could be a crate, a room that has been sectioned off with doggy gates, exercise or play pen. This means that until fully house trained your dog is never allowed to have the run of your house.

• Before you start dog crate training set up a feeding schedule that is suitable for you. Always feed your puppy at the same time each day. Ask your veterinarian how much and what to feed your dog. Leave the food down for 20 minutes and then remove. Do not make it available at other times. Fresh water should be available at all times. After 8 PM remove the water dish.

• Use the same door each time you take your puppy out. Use a command phrase or word that your dog will come to recognize, like, "Lets Go!"

• Select a spot to take your dog for elimination. Put him on a leash, this will give you more control. Stand still so that your pooch knows it is not play time. A command, such as "Hurry up" should be used.

• When house training your dog, establish a routine and your puppy will soon know to hold it until you take him out. Your dog should be taken out, first thing in the morning, after eating, playing, sleeping and just before bedtime.

  NOTE: If your dog is sniffing and circling, he is looking for a place to go. To avoid mistakes, take your puppy out!

• Make sure your puppy does eliminate before going inside. When your dog goes potty, tell him how great he is and repeat a phrase, such as,"good job" in an enthusiastic voice. If your dog was not successful, take him inside for 15 minutes and then try again.

• After your pup has eliminated, say what how great he is for doing the right thing. Don't immediately go inside, let your new buddy play for a few minutes, go for a walk or just sniff around the yard and be a dog. Your best friend will look forward to this and is more apt to hurry the process and look forward to some free time. Always reward your pet in some way.
  
• If you come upon an accident, clean it up immediately when your dog is not watching, with an odor neutralizer or eliminator (it is not advisable to use ammonia, as the primary component of urine is ammonia). Get rid of all trace of urine or your dog will use that same spot again. A dogs' sense of smell is 100-200 times greater than ours. Don't make a big deal about it or punish your puppy after the fact. Dogs are smart but do not understand cause and effect. Even after dog crate training is complete, accidents may occur. Quietly clean it up without making a fuss using a safe non-toxic dog urine cleaner that will remove the stain and the odor.
• If you actually catch your dog eliminating in the house, say "NO"! in a stern voice and take him outside to the appropriate place. Do not reprimand the crime, your puppy will not understand.

• When you take your puppy back to the crate use a command phrase, such as, "Crate" or "Inside".
