Owner Pulling on the Leash

by John
(San Diego)

About midway into a 1 mile walk my ten year old golden slows down and stops frequently. I have to "tug" him and coax him along. This is most evident when going up-slope. More pressure on the hips, heart problems? When I let him off the lead he sort of straggles along and maintains the same separation distance?

Maybe a Health Issue

Hi John,

Your dog is getting up in age and the first thing I would do is take him to see a veternarian for a check-up to eliminate any health issues like heart problems or arthritis.

Your dog may need a change in diet, medication or both.

It is good that he is getting some exercise but check with your vet. If everything checks out then vitamin supplements should also be added to a good diet. Dogs, like people do not absorb nutrients as well as they age.
